Important! How to Avoid Having Your Paper Falsely Accused of AI Use: Turnitin Can Also Make Mistakes

01 April 2026

A 2023 Stanford University study found that AI detection tools performed near perfectly when reviewing papers written by US born writers, but flagged more than half of papers written by ESL authors as AI-generated. This significant bias highlights a critical challenge for international researchers and writers.

If you spent countless hours writing a paper or report, only to have an AI detection tool flag it as AI-generated simply because of your linguistic background, the consequences can be devastating for your professional reputation.

Today, we share several methods to protect yourself and ensure your hard work is not wasted.

Reports on False AI Detection Results

As reported by the Washington Post:

Sarah Eaton, a professor of education at the University of Calgary, stated that too many educators treat AI detection tools as a “silver bullet to help them do the heavy lifting of identifying possible academic misconduct.”

“The reality is that these products are not perfect.”

Turnitin reports that its software incorrectly flags 4% of writing as AI-generated when analyzing sentences. When Turnitin detects less than 20% of a document as AI-generated, the false positive rate is even higher.

Bloomberg reported:

Bloomberg tested 500 papers written before ChatGPT’s release using two leading AI detection tools: GPTZero and Copyleaks. The results showed that these services incorrectly flagged 1% to 2% of papers as potentially AI-written.

OpenAI recently stated it has not released an AI writing detection tool, partly due to concerns about potential negative impacts on certain groups, including ESL students.

3 Ways to Prove Your Work Is Original

  1. Use Version History in Cloud Tools

Use cloud-based word processing tools such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word. The version history feature on these platforms clearly tracks every revision made to a document. Through this feature, you can demonstrate a complete timeline of how your document was written, showing that the content developed progressively rather than appearing all at once.

While it is possible for someone to paste AI-generated content in small increments, version history still enables careful step-by-step review to clarify the situation. Keep in mind, however, that it may not fully capture every detail of your editing process.

  1. Screen Record Your Writing Process

Another direct and effective method is using screen recording software to capture yourself writing. This approach provides a genuine visual record of how you developed and composed your content, serving as concrete evidence that the work was created by you personally.

A Chrome extension called Originality.ai can record your writing process and generate reports. You can watch this video to learn more.

  1. Write in Your Own Voice

According to Christopher Casey, Director of Digital Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, writing assignments in your own habitual language style helps demonstrate personal distinctiveness. By using vocabulary and expressions that you genuinely understand and regularly use, your content carries a clear personal character, further strengthening proof of originality.

Understanding the Appeals Process for Accusations

When general discussion and evidence are not enough to resolve the issue, you need to familiarize yourself with your institution’s official policies and procedures for academic misconduct. Knowing how to properly appeal enables you to effectively defend your rights when facing an unjust accusation.

  1. Find Appeal or Complaint Channels

If you believe you followed all requirements but your instructor has accused you otherwise, file a formal appeal in accordance with your institution’s policies to state your position.

  1. Seek Professional Support

Many universities have dedicated offices that help students navigate academic misconduct accusations. These departments can provide guidance on procedural steps, assist you in preparing documents and evidence, and help ensure the process is conducted fairly.

  1. Clarify the Institution’s AI Use Policy

In some cases, instructors may use unauthorized AI tools to accuse students writers of cheating. Different institutions, however, have vastly different rules regarding AI use. Review the course syllabus or journal submission guidelines carefully to understand what the specific entity requires with respect to AI.

Instructors should avoid using detection tools as a means of “punishment” and instead treat them as a filtering and support mechanism, focusing on understanding the authors learning and research processes. In fact, institutions such as the University of Michigan-Dearborn have already decided not to allow AI detection tools to be part of academic integrity investigations, in order to reduce the risk of potential misjudgment.

  1. Legal Support When All Else Fails

If every other avenue has been exhausted and the outcome is critical to your career, seeking legal advice may be worth considering. A lawyer may be able to assess whether the institution followed proper procedures and explore legal options. Note that legal action is typically expensive and time-consuming and should only be considered after all other options have fully failed.
