Theses are the first sustained introduction to formal writing for many aspiring academics and bring with them numerous problems of expression for second language users. Recognising this, the Division of Social Sciences at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology contacted us in 2011 to edit the theses of its MPhil students. The manuscripts would arrive in short succession over a limited period and we would need to return them without delay – just the sort of challenge we relish! Having impressed the Division and its students with our attention to detail and efficient workflow, we took on the job again the following year and have done so annually since.
